Lambda Centauri Nebula and Environs
IC 2944 and NGC 3766 Area (SS61 RMod).jpg
This is the region around the star Lambda Centauri, with the Running Chicken Nebula or IC 2948, at bottom, surrounding the star Lambda Centauri and the loose open star cluster IC 2944. The "head" of the chicken is the nebula catalogued as Gum 39; the "feet" of the chicken is RCW 61 (Rodgers-Campbell-Whiteoak).
Above is the rich star cluster NGC 3766, known as the Pearl Cluster, one of the southern sky's finest star clusters. The fainter cluster to the right of the Running Chicken is IC 2714. The nebulas at upper right are NGC 3603 (on the left) and NGC 3579 (right). NGC 3603 looks much redder than 3579 as it is dimmed more by interstellar dust. The field is filled with dark nebulas, and is a wonderful treat to view through binoculars or a low-power telescope. The field here is 7º by 5.5º, so similar to binoculars.
This is a stack of 12 x 5 minute exposures with the Sharpstar 61mm EDPH III refractor at f/4.4 and filter-modified (i.e. more red sensitive) Canon EOS R camera at ISO 800. However, no filter was employed here. On the AP 400 mount autoguided with the MGEN3. Taken March 9, 2024 from the Warrumbungles Mountain Motel near Coonabarabran, NSW, Australia during the OzSky star party.
