Waxing Crescent Moon and Jupiter
Waxing Moon and Jupiter (March 14, 2024).jpg
The waxing crescent Moon near Jupiter on the evening of March 14, 2024, setting into the western twilight sky on an austral autumn evening. The Moon is in thin cloud adding the colourful lunar "corona" around it from diffraction from the cloud's water droplets. Earthshine is visible on the "dark side of the Moon."
The Moon looks upside down or the "wrong way around," as this view is from the southern hemisphere. So this is not a waning Moon rising but a waxing Moon setting.
Taken from the Warrumbungles Mountain Motel near Coonabarabran, NSW, Australia. Taken on the last night of the 2024 OzSky star party.
This is a blend of exposures to retain the detail around the bright Moon and corona: long (2.5s) for the sky and stars, and three shorter (0.6s, 0.3s and 1/6s) exposures for the Moon, blended with luminosity masks, not HDR. With the Canon RF28-70mm lens at 70mm on the Canon EOS R at ISO 400. Not tracked, just on a fixed tripod.
