Orion, Sirius, and Canopus from Arizona
Orion, Sirius and Canopus from Arizona.jpg
This is the constellation of Orion (at top), with the bright star Sirius in Canis Major below it at centre, while just above the horizon is the bright star Canopus in Carina low in the southeast here. Sirius and Canopus are the brightest and second brightest stars in the night sky, respectively.
This illustrates how Canopus can be seen –just! – from southern U.S. latitudes, in this case 32° North. Here it is yellowed by atmospheric absorption. The other "Dog Star," Procyon in Canis Minor, is at top left.
Numerous star clusters are visible along the winter Milky Way, such as Messier 41 below Sirius and the M46/M47 pair left of Sirius.
Some airglow tints the sky, on a night when there was lots of aurora activity visible from this latitude. As the camera was tracking the sky the ground is blurred slightly.
Technical:
This is a stack of 4 x 1-minute tracked exposures with the RF15-35mm lens at 15mm and f/2.8 on the stock Canon R5 at ISO 1600, on the MSM Nomad tracker. Taken from the Quailway Cottage between Rodeo, New Mexico and Portal, Arizona, on October 11, 2024. Star glows added with Luminar Neo Magic Light brush.
