All-Sky Aurora from At Sea in Norway
All-Sky Aurora (Norway 2024).jpg
A fish-eye view of a sky-spanning arc of aurora, from the deck of the m/s Nordkapp, a Hurtigruten ferry ship along the coast of Norway. This was November 8, 2024 between Alesund and Trondheim.
The Big Dipper and Polaris are at bottom. Cassiopeia is above centre. At top are Taurus with the Pleiades and Jupiter. We are sailing almost due north here, as Polaris is directly above the bow of the ship.
Technical:
This is a 2-second exposure with the TTArtisan 7.5mm lens at f/2 on the Nikon ZIII at ISO 3200. The lens was a little out of focus so the stars are soft! But this serves as a good illustration of sailing by the stars for celestial navigation.
