Aurora in Lofoten Islands Panorama (Norway 2024)
Aurora in Lofoten Islands Panorama (Norway 2024).jpg
This is a panorama of auroral arcs across the southern sky, with prominent red content contrasting with the oxygen yellow-green bands. Taken on November 10/11, 2024 (just after midnight) at sea during a coastal cruise in Norway on the m/s Nordkapp, a ship in the Hurtigruten fleet of ferries and cruise ships. This is looking south from deck 7 of the ship, at the stern. We were in the Raftsundet Strait in the Lofoten Islands, north of Trollfjord.
Orion is rising from behnd the mountain at left. Jupiter is the bright object at upper left. The Pleiades are at top. Deneb and the summer Milky Way are at far right.
Technical:
This is a panorama of 7 segments, each 1.3-second exposures (short to minimize trailing from ship motion) with the Nikkor 20mm lens wide open at f/1.8 and Nikon Z6III at ISO 3200. Stitched with PTGui. Shooting a panorama from a moving ship is tricky and inevitably some segments end up with trailed stars, and the land blurs from the ship motion. Topaz Photo AI used to sharpen the blurry forground.
