Comet Rise over Bryce Canyon National Park
Comet Rise Over Bryce Canyon (Sept 28, 2024).jpg
This is Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS rising in the dawn twilight over Bryce Canyon, Utah, on the morning of September 28, 2024.
The location was Fairyland Point in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, looking almost due east. The time was 6:10 am MDT.
The comet was not visible to the naked eye, but could be seen in 10x50 binoculars — indeed, its tail rose first and was visible before the head cleared the distant mesa. The field of view is 15º by 10º so the tail is at least 7º to 8º long.
Technical:
This is a blend of a single tracked 15-second exposure at ISO 800 for the sky and a single untracked 30-second exposure at ISO 400, both at f/2 with the RF135mm lens on the Canon R5. The camera was on the MSM Nomad tracker. The tracker keeps the stars sharp, and the blending in of the untracked image keeps the ground sharp. The longer ground exposure brings out the landscape details. A mild and masked application of Nik Color EFX Detail Extractor on the sky helped bring out the tail.
