The Sagittarius Starcloud
Sagittarius Starcloud (Draco62 RMod).jpg
This frames the bright Sagittarius Starcloud looking toward the galactic centre, with its bright starclouds contrasting with dark nebulas and dust lanes in the Milky Way. While the Starcloud sits in a relatlvely dust-free window, enough interstellar dust intervenes to make the Starcloud yellow by absorption of blue wavelengths. Some of the dust lanes at lower left seem to have a swirling structure.
At top left is the small Ink Spot Nebula, Barnard 86, beside the star cluster NGC 6520. At right of centre is the star cluster NGC 6528, aka the Tom Thumb Cluster, which lies very close to the direction of the galactic centre at 0º galactic longitude.
Messier 8, the Lagoon Nebula, lies just off frame at top and Messier 6, the Butterfly Cluster, is off frame at bottom right.
The field is about 8.2º x 5.5 °.
Technical:
This is a stack of just 9 x 3 minute exposures with the Founder Optics Draco 62 astrographic refractor at f/4 with its Reducer/Flattener and the astro-modified Canon R at ISO 800. It was on the Star Adventurer GTi equatorial mount, autoguided with the ASIAir and ZWO guidescope. Taken from the Quailway Cottage in southeast Arizona on October 5, 2024 with this field getting low into the southwest sky, so limiting the exposure time.
