The Double Star Algedi, Alpha Capricorni
Algedi or Alpha Capricornus (APO120 Ra).jpg
This is the wide double star Alpha1 and Alpha2 Capricorni, aka Algedi Prima (on the right) and Algedi Secunda (on the left). With a separation of 0.1º‚ they are resolvable to the unaided eye and are best in binoculars. However, they are not physically close to each other in space, with Prima 109 light years away and Secunda 690 light years away. But coincidentally they are similar yellow-orange giant stars, with Secunda a little more luminous, making up for its greater distance.
This is a stack of 9 x 3-minute exposures with the Askar APO120 refractor at f/5.6 (for a 3º by 2º field) and Canon Ra at ISO 800. Taken from Quailway Cottage in Arizona in October 2024.
