Comet over Arches National Park Panorama (Oct 15, 2024)
Comet over Arches National Park Panorama (Oct 15, 2024).jpg
This is a panorama of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (C/2023 A3) over the red rocks of Arches National Park, Utah, on a marvelous moonlit night, October 15, 2024, with the comet easy to see with the unaided eye.
The comet was at its finest in the evening sky, sporting a 10º- to 15º-long dust tail, and a short anti-tail ahead of the comet.
This is a 240° panorama, with west toward the comet and the lingering evening twilight; north (with the Big Dipper) at right; and southwest (with Sagittarius and the Milky Way barely showing up) to the left. Tthe bright star to the right of the comet is Arcturus.
The sky and foreground are lit by the waxing gibbous Moon off frame to the left. Yet despite the bright moonlight, the tail of the comet was still easy to see naked eye. It was an impressive sight and a superb night.
This was from the main park road at the Courthouse Wash pulloff.
Technical:
This is a panorama of 11 segments, each 6-second exposures, untracked, with the RF28-70mm lens at 28mm and at f/2.2 on the Canon R5 at ISO 200. Processed and stitched in Adobe Camera Raw.
The original is 27,000 pixels wide.
