The Watery Constellations of Autumn
Aquarius, Piscis Aus & Capricornus (RF28-70mm RMod).jpg
Thisi is a framing of the southern constellations of:
- Aquarius (top left),
- Piscis Austrinus (bottom centre),
- and Capricornus (top right).
Together they are known as the "watery constellations" as they are all water-related from Greek mythology. Aquarius is the water carrier and Capricornus is a sea-goat. Piscis Austrinus is the Southern Fish well south of the larger Zodiac constellation of Pisces the Fish.
All are low in the south from mid-northern hemisphere latitudes. This was from southern Arizona in early October 2024, in a sky filled with green airglow this night, brightest toward the southern horizon off frame at the bottom.
At this time Saturn was also in Aquarius, as the brightest "star" at upper left. The bright star below it is Fomalhaut in PsA. The Y-shaped asterism called the Water Jar in Aquarius is at top left.
The large (for a planetary nebula) Helix Nebula, NGC 7293, just shows up as a small magenta disk left of centre at this wide image scale.
Technical:
This is a stack of 12 x 2.5 minute exposures with the Canon RF28-70mm lens at 28mm and at f/2.8 on the astro-modified Canon R at ISO 1600, tracking the sky on the MSM Nomad tracker. Taken from the Quailway Cottage near Portal, Arizona.
I have emphasized the patterns of these faint constellations with glows on the stars, and by shrinking the fainter stars..
