The setting Sun descending into a fog bank on a rural highway looking due west, on the evening of the vernal equinox, March 20, 2023. So the Sun is setting due west. The fog dims and reddens the Sun, illustrating atmospheric absorption. This was on Highway 561 in southern Alberta. <br />

The fog dims and reddens the Sun, illustrating atmospheric absorption, and refraction as the solar disk is quite flattened. A couple of sunspots are just visible. The colour gradient is natural and comes from the blend of fog below and clearer twilight sky above. This is a single exposure with the RF100-400mm lens at 400mm on the Canon R5. Autofocused on the Sun.$

Shafts of sunlight (technically called crepuscular rays) captured on a partly cloudy day over the peaks of the Continental Divide and the glacier-fed Athabasca River. This was from the Goats and Glaciers Viewpoint on the Icefields Parkway in Jasper National Park on a mid-October day. <br />
<br />
This is a single hand-held exposure with the RF15-35mm lens at 28mm on the Canon R5. Enhancements added with Radiant Photo, Luminar Neo and ON1 Effects.

The Sun setting into a pall of forest fire smoke over Alberta from fires in B.C. and elsewhere, on August 17, 2018. This shows the dimming and reddening of the Sun as it set, with it disappearing from view long before it reached the horizon.<br />
<br />
This was from home in southern Alberta, and is a Lighten blend mode stack of 20 images taken at 10 minute intervals, and shot on Auto Exposure with the Canon 6D MkII and 35mm lens. The frames are part of a larger 200-frame timelapse processed with LRTimelapse.

$A dramatic bolt of lightning shoots across the sky from home, on August 2, 2018. This is a stack of 10 frames extracted from a 4K video, with the frames 1/24th second apart, and blended with Lighten mode to capture the entire extent of the bolt travel in the fraction of a second it appeared. Taken from home from my back deck with the Sony a7III and Laowa 15mm lens.$

$A fine example of a Fata Morgana (“castles in the air”) mirage over the prairies, caused by a layer of warm air aloft refracting light rays and lifting and distorting the images of object on the horizon, in this case distant wind machines and grain silos and elevators. In some area, images of the ground object appears inverted above the real thing. Plus the sky is reflected in the mirage layers, giving the impression of bodies of water in the distance. The temperature was -20° C at this time, at least near the ground. This was at the end of a cold snap with -30° C temperatures. Warmer air was moving in at last.
