Perseid Meteors Amid Aurora (August 11, 2024).jpg
Three Perseid meteors streak away from the radiant point in Perseus at lower left amid a superb display of Northern Lights on August 11-12, 2024, here at the 70 Mile Butte trailhead in Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan, near Val Marie. A fourth streak at top is not streaking away from the radiant point and may be a sporadic meteor or a flaring satellite. The meteor in the upper left corner has an odd broken and waving trail and a bright red head.
This was in the minutes leading up to a bright sub-storm outburst of the aurora and is looking northeast to southeast.
Perseus is at lower left; Cassiopiea is at left of centre; Andromeda is at lower centre. Saturn is just rising over 70 Mile Butte at lower right.
This is a blend of four frames taken within a span of 40 minutes, from a 407-frame time-lapse. Each exposure was 8 seconds with a 1-second interval. One frame contributes the ground, sky and meteor at centre; the other later frames contribute the other meteors and satellite? They are positioned correctly with respect to the star background, by rotating their frames to account for the sky motion.
This was with the Venus Optics/Laowa 10mm Z lens wide open at f/2.8 on the Nikon Z6III at ISO 1600. Adobe DeNoise AI applied.
