Waxing Moon over Stutfield Glacier (28-70mm R5).jpg
The waxing 9-day-old gibbous Moon shines above the Stutfield Glacier and Peak, in Jasper National Park, on the Icefields Parkway. This was July 15, 2024 on a very clear night in the Rocky Mountains.
The Peak and Glacier were named in 1899 by J. Norman Collie for Hugh Stutfield, a pioneering 19th century mountaineer who climbed with Collie.
Technical:
This is a tough scene to capture as the range in brightness, easy for the eye to see, is a challenge for the camera to record. To do so, I used a blend of multiple exposures, from long for the sky and ground, to short for the lunar disk and its surrounding glow, all with the RF28-70mm lens at 60mm and f/4 on the Canon R5 at ISO 100. The set includes:
- A single 25-second untracked exposure for the sky and ground, thus the trailed stars. Adobe DeNoise AI was applied to the main base image.
- A stack of 9 exposures from 10 seconds to 1/160 second for the Moon and glow, blended with luminosity masks, not HDR, created with the Lumenzia extension panel in Photoshop.
Luminar Neo plug-in used to add a mild application of final Accent, Structure and Magic Light effects.
