Orion & Canis Major Panorama.jpg
This is a panoroma of the Milky Way around Orion (right), Monoceros (centre), and Canis Major (at bottom), taking in Canis Minor as well (at upper left), including the dog stars Sirius (lower) and Procyon (upper left).
Wrapping around the east side (left) of Orion is Barnard's Loop (aka Sharpless 2-276). Below the Belt of Orion is the Horsehead Nebula area and the bright Orion Nebula in the Sword of Orion. Surrounding the head of Orion is the large Angelfish Nebula, aka Sharpless 2-264. Above Sirius is the Seagull Nebula, IC 2177. The round nebula left of Barnard's Loop is the Rosette Nebula, NGC 2237.
Red Betelgeuse is at top left of Orion; blue Rigel at bottom right. Procyon, Sirius and Betelgeuse form the "Winter Triangle."
Several star clusters are visible at this scale including M41 below Sirius and M46 and M47 left of Sirius.
Technical:
This is a mosaic of 2 frames, each a stack of 4 or 5 x 4 minute exposures at f/2.8 with the 35mm Canon EF lens and modified Canon 5D MkII at ISO 800, plus each segment also having a glow layer composed of 2 x 4 minute exposures through the Kenko Softon diffusion filter. So a total of 11 exposures for this 2-frame mosaic, stacked and stitched in Photoshop. Taken from Painted Pony Resort in SW New Mexico, December 7, 2013. No filter was employed. Lots of frost this night! Reprocessed in 2025.
