Aurora Outburst over 70 Mile Butte (Aug 11, 2024).jpg
The Northern Lights in a superb display on August 11-12, 2024, here over 70 Mile Butte in Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan, near Val Marie. This was at the peak of a substorm outburst at 12:20 a.m. CST.
The aurora was bright enough during this substorm outburst that the red and green colours could be seen with the eye, though they were subtle. The camera always records the colours with more intensity. The image sweeps up to the swirling corona at the zenith overhead at upper right. Cassiopeia is at upper left.
This is a single 2-second exposure with the Venus Optics/Laowa 10mm lens wide open at f/2.8 on the Nikon Z6III at ISO 6400. Taken as part of a time-lapse sequence.
