Mars, Jupiter and Milky Way Rising (Aug 10, 2024).jpg
Bright Jupiter with red Mars above it are in Taurus rising at about 2 am here, with the Pleiades and autumn Milky Way above in the northeast. The planets were 2° apart this morning.
Cassiopeia is at top; Perseus is at centre; Auriga and Taurus are rising. At top is Andromeda and the Andromeda Galaxy, M31.
Mars was almost the same brightness as the red giant star Aldebaran nearby, and the two have similar reddish tints. This was 4 days before the two planets' very close conjunction, but clouds and smoke on later days prevented a shot of this conjunction. Some green airglow bands tint the sky.
This was from the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park in Saskatchewan, on August 10, 2024.
This is a single of 13-second exposure with the Nikon Z6III at ISO 1600 and Nikkor 20mm lens at f/2. Not tracked.
