Comet Tail Rising Over Pelloncillo Mtns (Oct 2, 2024).jpg
This is just the faint extended tail of Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS rising in the pre-dawn sky over the Pelloncillo Mountains in New Mexico, on October 2, 2024. The head of the comet had yet to rise. But at this time the sky was still dark enough to reveal the faint extended dust tail.
The location was the Quailway Cottage just west of Rodeo, New Mexico, just over the state line in Arizona. The time was 5:50 am MDT.
The tail was visible in binoculars, but only just. The bright head of the comet did not clear the mountain ridge line until about 6:13 am, more than 20 minutes later.
The field of view is 10º by 15º, so the tail extends about 10º here, and is certainly longer as much of it is still below the horizon or behind the mountains.
Technical:
This is a single 15-second untracked exposure with the RF135mm lens at f/2 on the Canon R5 at ISO 3200.
