Milky Way over Takakkaw Falls (16mm Z6III).jpg
The Milky Way in Cygnus, Cepheus and Cassiopeia is here rising over Takakkaw Falls in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada on a July night. The setting quarter Moon is still illuminating the peak at right but the sky is dark enough (with some residual moonlight adding a blue tint) for the Milky Way to show up well. The illumination of the ground is from starlight and sky light. The long exposure brings out the details. No light painting was employed.
Takakkaw Falls is the second tallest waterfall in Canada, and is fed by the meltwaters of Daly Glacier in the Waputik Icefield. The river in the foreground is the Yoho River. This was from the Parks Canada "red chairs" location.
Technical:
This is a blend of tracked (for the sky) and untracked (for the ground) exposures:
- 2 x 3-minutes at f/2.8 and ISO 800 for the ground,
- and 5 x 1-minute at f/2 and ISO 800 for the sky.
All with the Viltrox 16mm lens on the Nikon Z6III camera, and on the MSM Nomad tracker, and cropped in slightly. Taken just before 1 am local time on July 14,/15, 2024 on a perfect night in the Rockies, with no clouds or smoke! I was the only one there this night, just me and a family of mountain goats.
Finishing effects added with Luminar Neo and Nik Color EFX. Adobe DeNoise AI applied to the raw ground images. RC-Astro Noise XTerminator applied to the sky stack.
