M50 Cluster in Monoceros (EDQ86 R5).jpg
This is a close-up telescopic view of the bright star cluster Messier 50 in Monoceros. It is a fine star cluster embedded in the Milky Way but is often overlooked.
Some obscure nebulas inhabit the field: The small bluish reflection nebula van den Bergh 87 (vdB 87) is below right of M50 surrounding a trio of stars. The bit of emission nebulosity at upper right is NGC 2316. The identity of the faint diffuse nebulosity at far right is unclear — Sharpless 2-291 is nearby to the west but not in this position. It might be Dorschner-Gurtler 113, aka LBN 1022. The very red star at upper left is RY Monocerotis.
Technical:
This is a stack of 12 x 5 minute exposures with the Astro-Tech EDQ86 apo refractor at its native f/7 focal ratio, using the Canon R5 at ISO 800. On the Astro-Physics AP400 mount autoguided with the Lacerta MGEN3 guider. Taken during a night-long shoot on a mild winter night in January 2025.
