Aurora Behind Purple Clouds (May 10, 2024).jpg
The major aurora show of May 10, 2024 seen here in deep twilight and in a partly cloudy sky, but with aurora still showing up and lighting the clouds purple, and with a bright arc overhead. This serves to illlustrate how during a major storm the aurora can be seen even in twilight and amid some clouds. An isolated bright arc appears at top, likely not a STEVE arc. It was visible to the eye but briefly.
This is looking east and up, from home in southern Alberta, Canada. The zenith is above centre. The Big Dipper is at the zenith above centre; Arcturus at right of centre. The bright light at right is the headlights from the tractor working the field south of me, getting the seeding done.
This was at the start of the night, at 10:50 pm MDT, using the Canon R5 at ISO 400 and 7.5mm TTArtisan full-frame fish-eye lens at f/2.8 for 20 seconds. My array of 3 other cameras I shot with this night are at right.
