Noctilucent Clouds Panorama (June 24, 2024).jpg
A panorama across the northern horizon of a display of noctilucent clouds, on June 24/25, 2024. NLCs are bright high-altitude clouds some 80 km up that are sunlit even in the middle of the night on summer nights from mid-northern latitudes.
This was my first sighting of NLCs for the 2024 season, and the first in two years, as I saw no NLCs in summer 2023, due to low activity but also lots of forest fire smoke.
Here the bright NLCs contrast with the dark silhouettes of nearby tropospheric clouds, and with the deep blue and yellow of a solstice twilight sky. This display was odd in that it was brightest to the northeast (at right here) despite the time of 11:30 pm – early in the night when NLCs are usually brightest in the northwest above the sunset point. They are normally not bright in the northeast until before dawn.
This was from home in southern Alberta, at latitude 51° N.
This is a panorama of 6 segments with the RF24-105mm lens at 85mm on the Canon R5 for 13 seconds each at f/4 and at ISO 100. Stitched in Camera Raw.
