M38 Cluster in Auriga (EDQ86 R5).jpg
This is the bright showpiece star cluster Messier 38 in Auriga, one of the trio of Messier clusters with nearby M36 and a little farther away M37. M38 is also known as the Starfish Cluster due to the impression of several arms of stars visible in the eyepiece. M38 is accompanied by the smaller cluster NGC 1907 below it. While the latter is slightly farther away, in this case its smaller size is intrinsic. A barely perceptible dim cluster upper right of M38 is Czernik (Cz) 21.
Technical:
This is a stack of 19 x 5 minute exposures with the Astro-Tech EDQ86 apo refractor at its native f/7 focal ratio, using the Canon R5 at ISO 800. On the Astro-Physics AP400 mount autoguided with the Lacerta MGEN3 guider. Shot from home on a mild winter night in January 2025.
