STEVE Arc #3 @ SSSP05.jpg
An unusual arc of stationary aurora, arcing across the sky from west to east like a searchlight, but with little motion. Well seen across western Canada that night, August 5-6, 2005. Unknown to us at the time, but this was an appearance of what became known a decade later as STEVE, here with the green picket fence fingers.
Technical:
Photographed from the Saskatchewan Summer Star Party, with Canon 20Da camera and 16mm lens at f/2.8 and ISO 400 for 3 minutes, tracked. Contrast boosted but aurora colors left untouched. Arc was primarily pink.
